John Silva is a classical pianist and composer. As a pianist, his affection for the intrinsic sound of the piano is expressed through his use of tone and colour. As a composer, he focuses on the beautiful interaction between tones and the harmonies they produce.
John received the Master of Music (MMus) degree from the Trinity College of Music in London, where he studied under scholarship with Douglas Finch. John is also a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music (FRSM) in piano performance, which he completed at the Royal College of Music in London.
John began playing and improvising on the piano at the age of three and his first teacher was his father. John has studied piano with the esteemed pianist Abbey Simon, Jonathan Miles Freeman (a student of Sascha Gorodnitzki and Marian Filar) and Robert Marler. He studied composition and theory with Dr. Daniel Barta, Dr. E. M. Harrington and Dr. William Purcell.
John is also passionate about teaching and offers lessons in classical piano, ear training and theory.
John is married to Rebecca and they have three children, Ceri, Euan and Cian (Joshua 24:15).
“John’s artistry has been an inspiration to me ... He is a composer whose works exhibit craft, wit, charm, and beauty of sound. He is his own piano technician ... and he also happens to be an extraordinarily fine pianist.”
Dr. David Curtin
